In October, Splish Salon Systems Inc. opened its first concept salon – and first green-built salon – in Conifer.

Splish Salon, located in the Conifer Safeway Center at 27122 Main St., features all natural products, and stylists using an environmentally friendly and socially responsible philosophy as their guiding principles. Additionally, Splish offers high-end services at affordable prices.

According to the Splish Salon Systems, the 1,700-sf salon is the first salon in the nation to promote and practice a consistent and environmentally friendly approach to the hair salon business.

The salon features green-built interior finishes that include: hardwood floors from a sustainable forest in Paraguay; carpets made of eco-friendly polypropylene; counters and cabinet surfaces made of recycled banana fibers; all natural cork used in the salon; colored and textures walls by American Clay; low-voltage or CFL lighting; and exterior signage lit by LEDs rather than Argonne gas.

At the grand opening event, the Mountain Area Land Trust was its benefactor with 10 percent of its retail sales and 100 percent of all ticket sales for a gift basket drawing going to the nonprofit group.

Splish Salon Systems, based in Keystone, will carry its concept nationwide starting in 2008. It plans to open a Parker and Aurora Salon in 2008, a Castle Rock salon in 2009 along with salons in Irvine, Calif.; Seattle; Tucson and Phoenix, Ariz.; and Portland, Ore.; and Chicago in 2010.
